Set decades before the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the story follows Aragorn during one of the darkest and most secret missions of his life. Rumors begin spreading across Middle-earth that the creature known as Gollum has escaped into the wilderness after years of hiding in the Misty Mountains. At the same time, the shadow of Sauron grows stronger in Mordor, and Gandalf fears that Gollum may reveal dangerous information about the One Ring. Knowing the fate of Middle-earth could depend on silence, Aragorn is sent to track him down before the servants of the Dark Lord can reach him first.
Aragorn travels through abandoned forests, ruined kingdoms, and forgotten caves, following whispers of a pale creature that moves like a ghost through the night. Along the way, he encounters Rangers of the North who warn him that strange creatures have begun gathering near the borders of Mordor. Orc patrols roam farther than ever before, searching villages and travelers for signs of Gollum. Aragorn realizes he is not hunting alone, and every step becomes a race against the enemy.
Meanwhile, Gollum himself wanders through Middle-earth consumed by fear and madness. His mind shifts constantly between his broken personality and his obsession with the precious Ring that was stolen from him years ago. Flashbacks reveal fragments of his painful past, showing how centuries of corruption transformed him into a creature trapped between pity and evil. Although hunted by both sides, Gollum manages to survive through deception, hiding in caves and ancient ruins while leaving chaos behind him.
As Aragorn closes in on his target, he forms an uneasy alliance with Legolas, who has been sent by the Elves to investigate growing darkness in the woodland realms. Together, they uncover signs that Sauron’s forces are preparing for something far greater than the search for Gollum. Entire regions are falling under fear, and creatures once believed extinct begin returning to the shadows. The journey slowly reveals how fragile peace has become across Middle-earth.
The hunt finally leads Aragorn deep into the Dead Marshes, where Gollum is captured after a tense confrontation surrounded by wraith-like visions and lurking Orcs. However, keeping Gollum alive proves even harder than finding him. Gollum constantly attempts escape while whispering secrets about the Ring and the “Baggins” who possesses it. Aragorn realizes the creature may be dangerous, but he also sees the tragic remains of the Hobbit Gollum once was.
In the final act, Aragorn delivers Gollum to the Elves of Mirkwood, fulfilling Gandalf’s request. Yet the victory feels hollow. Sauron’s eye is turning toward the Shire, and Aragorn understands that a far greater war is approaching. The film ends with Aragorn standing alone beneath the cold skies of Middle-earth, watching darkness spread across the horizon while Gollum whispers the name of Frodo Baggins in captivity. The final scene connects directly to the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, setting the stage for the legendary journey that is still to come.
