“Baba Yaga: House of Shadows (2025)” reimagines the ancient Slavic legend through a dark fantasy–horror lens, following a young woman named Alina who returns to her rural hometown after her mother’s mysterious disappearance. The film opens with Alina discovering strange markings around the old family property and finding her mother’s journal filled with cryptic warnings about a creeping presence in the nearby forest. Her search leads her deeper into folklore she once dismissed, awakening fears she thought she had outgrown.
As Alina digs further, she begins experiencing chilling visions—whispers in the night, shadows moving without form, and glimpses of a twisted house standing on crooked, root-like legs. The villagers speak reluctantly of Baba Yaga, claiming she has become more active as the barrier between worlds weakens. Despite their fear, no one is willing to accompany Alina into the woods, leaving her to face the growing darkness alone. Her determination is fueled by guilt, believing she ignored the signs her mother tried to reveal.

When Alina follows a trail of symbols into the forest, she stumbles upon the legendary House of Shadows, a living structure that shifts, creaks, and breathes as though it is sentient. Inside, the walls are filled with relics of lost souls—dolls, masks, and pieces of clothing suspended as if frozen in time. Each step triggers illusions that distort reality, forcing Alina to confront fragments of her past twisted into nightmarish shapes. The tension escalates as she realizes the house feeds on fear itself.
Baba Yaga emerges not as a simple monster but as an ancient entity bound by rules older than human memory. She offers Alina a cruel bargain: surrender her freedom in exchange for her mother’s release. The scenes between them blend menace and tragic depth, suggesting that Baba Yaga is both tormentor and prisoner of the forest’s dark magic. Alina must resist, yet the house manipulates her emotions, making her doubt her own sanity.

As the house begins to close in, Alina uncovers the truth: her mother attempted to break the curse but became trapped in the spirit realm when the ritual failed. Armed with this knowledge, Alina performs the ritual herself, navigating haunting illusions while Baba Yaga tries to stop her. The struggle becomes both physical and psychological, pushing her to the edge.
In the final act, Alina succeeds in weakening the house’s power, releasing her mother’s spirit but at a steep cost. Baba Yaga vanishes into the collapsing structure, leaving behind eerie silence. The film ends with Alina returning to the village at dawn, forever changed, carrying both grief and newfound strength as the forest whispers one final warning that the darkness may one day return.
