The story begins as young historian Eleanor Graves returns to her family’s long-abandoned countryside estate after the passing of her estranged grandmother. Although she intends only to catalog old documents and prepare the property for sale, she is immediately drawn to a strange circular stone structure behind the house—a deep, moss-covered well she vaguely remembers from childhood nightmares. The locals warn her that the land is cursed, claiming that no one who disturbs the well leaves unchanged, but Eleanor dismisses their superstitions until she starts hearing faint whispers rising from the darkness below.
As Eleanor digs deeper into her family’s past, she discovers a series of journals written by her grandmother detailing the mysterious disappearance of several villagers decades earlier. The entries describe a malevolent entity bound within the well, a spirit born from the suffering of those who were once sacrificed there during an ancient ritual. Although Eleanor wants to believe the writings are delusions, strange occurrences intensify around her—objects move on their own, shadows shift unnaturally, and a chilling presence seems to stalk her through the house at night.
Determined to make sense of the haunting, Eleanor enlists the help of Daniel Hawthorne, a folklore researcher who has long studied legends of the “Wellbound Spirit.” Together, they piece together a grim history: generations of Eleanor’s family had been tasked with guarding the well to ensure the entity remained confined. But with the line of guardians broken, the spirit is slowly awakening, seeking release into the world through Eleanor herself. Daniel warns her that the connection between her bloodline and the well runs deeper than she realizes.
As the entity grows stronger, Eleanor begins experiencing terrifying visions that blur the line between memory and hallucination. She sees faces of the lost villagers, hears their cries from beneath the earth, and feels the cold grip of the spirit attempting to possess her. The well’s influence begins warping reality around the estate, twisting the land into a nightmarish reflection of its tragic past. Eleanor realizes that the only way to stop the awakening is to confront the spirit within the well and attempt a sealing ritual described in her grandmother’s final journal.
In the climactic descent, Eleanor enters the well’s depths, battling both the entity and the haunting revelations about her family’s role in sustaining its imprisonment. With Daniel’s support from above, she completes the ritual, but not without sacrificing a part of herself to contain the spirit once more. Emerging scarred but alive, she watches as the well seals shut, unsure whether the entity is truly gone or merely waiting.
The film ends with Eleanor leaving the estate at dawn, believing she has broken the cycle. Yet as the camera lingers on the well, a faint whisper rises once more, suggesting the darkness may never truly be silenced.
