The Devil’s Arithmetic (1999) – Official Movie Trailer

The Devil’s Arithmetic (1999) follows Hannah Stern, a modern Jewish teenager who has grown tired of her family’s constant emphasis on tradition, memory, and the painful stories of the past. During a Passover Seder, she grows impatient with the rituals and the repeated reminders of history, believing that the tragedies her relatives speak of have little relevance to her life. But when she opens the door for the prophet Elijah, as tradition requires, she is suddenly transported from her suburban home into a small Polish village in the early 1940s.

Confused and frightened, Hannah finds herself living as Chaya Abramowicz, a girl recovering from sickness and cared for by relatives she has never met. At first, she believes she is dreaming or participating in some elaborate reenactment, but the daily routines, the warmth of the villagers, and the unmistakable tension of wartime make the experience feel painfully real. Despite her confusion, she begins to bond with a young girl named Rivka, whose innocence and optimism strike her deeply.

The peace of the village is shattered when Nazi soldiers arrive without warning, forcing the entire community into cattle cars and transporting them to a concentration camp. Hannah, still possessing memories of the future, knows the horrors that await them, but she is powerless to change the course of events. She attempts to warn those around her, yet her pleas are dismissed as fear or imagination. As the camp’s brutal realities unfold, she begins to understand the weight of the suffering her ancestors endured.

Life in the camp becomes a harsh lesson in survival. Hannah witnesses starvation, cruelty, and the quiet acts of resistance that keep hope alive. Rivka teaches her how to avoid selections, how to stay unnoticed, and how to cling to life even when death feels inevitable. Through their friendship, Hannah comes to see each prisoner not as a figure from history but as a living person with dreams, love, and dignity.

When Rivka is selected for execution, Hannah’s transformation reaches its emotional peak. Realizing the true meaning of sacrifice, she steps forward and takes Rivka’s place. In that moment of selfless courage, the world around her dissolves, and she finds herself back at the Passover Seder, gasping for breath as if she has just returned from another lifetime.

Shaken and forever changed, Hannah finally understands why her family insists on remembering the past. She now sees that memory is not a burden but a responsibility—an act of honoring those who lived, suffered, and loved. With tears in her eyes, she embraces her relatives, knowing that their stories truly belong to her as well.
