Set in a remote wildlife reserve in northern Botswana, The Hippopotamus (2025) follows the story of Dr. Lena Hart, a wildlife behavior specialist sent to investigate a series of unexplained attacks near the Okavango Delta. While the region is no stranger to dangerous animals, the pattern of destruction suggests something far more deliberate than instinctive aggression. Local villagers speak of a massive, scarred hippopotamus known as “The River King,” a creature believed to possess an unnerving intelligence and a vengeful nature. Lena arrives skeptical but determined to uncover the truth behind the growing fear.
As Lena begins her research, she partners with Kaito Mbeki, a ranger who has spent years tracking the River King’s movements. Kaito believes the creature is reacting to new illegal mining operations poisoning the water that sustains the hippo herds. Together, they follow a trail of disturbed riverbeds, damaged boats, and abandoned campsites, each sign indicating the animal is becoming more territorial. The deeper they travel into the delta, the more they sense an unsettling awareness in the creature’s actions—as though it is watching them as much as they are watching it.

The situation escalates when a foreign mining corporation sends armed contractors to secure their operations, dismissing local concerns and treating the wildlife as expendable obstacles. When several workers go missing near the river, the corporation blames poachers, but Lena and Kaito find evidence that the River King is responsible. However, they also uncover signs of severe toxins in the water, confirming that human interference is pushing the animal into a state of desperation and rage.
As tensions rise, Lena proposes relocating the creature to protect both the villagers and the hippo populations, but her plan is rejected by the corporation, which sees the River King as a threat to be eliminated. Conflict erupts when the contractors launch a hunt for the animal, forcing Lena and Kaito to intervene before the fragile ecosystem is irreversibly damaged. Their attempt to protect the creature leads them deeper into restricted territory, where they discover illegal drilling sites responsible for the contamination.

In a dramatic confrontation near the river’s edge, the hunt spirals out of control, triggering a chaotic clash between humans and nature. Lena must make a desperate choice—save the creature she came to understand or stop it before more lives are lost. The final encounter reveals both the brutality and vulnerability of the River King, leaving Lena to confront the consequences of humanity’s intrusion into a world it barely understands.
