Years after returning home from the magical land of Oz, Dorothy Gale has grown into a young woman struggling to leave her childhood memories behind. Life in Kansas has become harder after devastating droughts destroy farms across the countryside, and many people dismiss Dorothy’s stories about Oz as fantasies invented by grief and loneliness. Yet Dorothy still dreams of emerald skies, yellow brick roads, and the friends she once left behind. Deep inside, she fears Oz may still need her.
One storm-filled night, a mysterious silver tornado appears over the plains, unlike anything Dorothy has ever seen. Inside the whirlwind she hears the distant cries of Glinda warning that darkness has returned to Oz. Before she can escape, Dorothy is swept away once more, awakening in a twisted version of the magical kingdom she remembers. The once-beautiful Emerald City now lies partially abandoned, its green towers cracked and covered in black vines spreading across the land like a living infection.
Dorothy soon reunites with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, but time has changed them all. The Scarecrow now rules the Emerald City yet struggles with doubt and paranoia. The Tin Man’s heart has slowly hardened after years of war, while the Lion hides his fear behind anger and violence. Together they reveal that a mysterious sorceress known as The Grey Witch emerged from beyond the Deadly Desert and began draining magic from Oz itself.
As darkness spreads, entire regions of Oz begin collapsing into lifeless wastelands. Flying monkeys roam freely across ruined villages, enchanted creatures disappear overnight, and the Yellow Brick Road slowly crumbles into dust. Dorothy learns that the Grey Witch seeks an ancient artifact called the Rainbow Heart, a source of magic hidden beyond the borders of Oz in a forgotten realm where no traveler has ever returned alive.
Joined by a rebellious young witch named Elara and a mischievous talking fox called Fidget, Dorothy journeys beyond the rainbow into strange new lands untouched by the original kingdom. They cross frozen forests where time stands still, oceans that reflect human fears, and giant floating islands suspended in endless clouds. Along the way, Dorothy begins questioning whether Oz truly exists as a magical place or if it is somehow connected to her own fears about growing older and losing hope.
Meanwhile, the Grey Witch’s army marches toward the Emerald City, consuming magic wherever they travel. Glinda reveals a devastating truth: the balance between the human world and Oz is collapsing. If the Rainbow Heart is destroyed, both worlds may disappear forever. Dorothy realizes she must make a painful choice between returning home permanently or remaining in Oz to protect the people she loves.
In the climactic finale, Dorothy confronts the Grey Witch inside the ruins of an ancient palace floating beyond the edge of the rainbow. The battle tears apart the skies of Oz as magic erupts across the kingdom. Dorothy ultimately discovers the Grey Witch was once a guardian of Oz corrupted by loneliness and fear after being forgotten by history. Instead of destroying her, Dorothy uses the Rainbow Heart to restore the lost magic of Oz, healing the land and freeing the Witch from her curse.
The film ends with peace returning to the Emerald City as life slowly blooms again across the kingdom. Dorothy stands before a glowing portal leading back to Kansas while her friends wait beside her. After a long silence, she smiles through tears and steps toward the portal — but just before entering, she hears another mysterious voice calling her name from somewhere deeper within Oz, hinting that even greater mysteries remain hidden beyond the rainbow.
