In the waning years of the American Civil War, Jonah Hex, a hardened bounty hunter scarred by betrayal and grief, wanders the frontier as a man shaped by violence. Once a Confederate soldier who turned against his brutal commanding officer, Quentin Turnbull, Hex carries both physical scars — a burned, disfigured face — and emotional ones left by the slaughter of his family. Saved from death by a Native tribe that gives him the ability to speak to the dead, Hex becomes a legend feared across the territory.
While Hex drifts from job to job, Turnbull, long believed dead, resurfaces with a new plan to plunge the nation into chaos. Now a fanatic obsessed with vengeance, Turnbull assembles a mercenary force to unleash an experimental superweapon capable of destroying entire cities. His goal is simple: punish the United States for the Confederacy’s defeat, regardless of the cost. When the government learns of his survival, they realize that only one man has the knowledge — and the fury — to stop him.

Reluctantly recruited by President Grant’s agents, Hex begrudgingly agrees to the mission, driven less by patriotism than by a burning desire to finish the feud that destroyed his life. Along the journey, he reconnects with Lilah, a resilient and sharp-witted saloon performer who shares a bond of mutual loneliness with him. Though she longs for something more stable, she understands that Hex’s world rarely allows space for peace.
As Hex tracks Turnbull across the lawless frontier and into the industrializing East, he interrogates both the living and the dead, piecing together clues through brutal battles and tense encounters. His supernatural gift proves both a blessing and a curse, giving him insight others lack but constantly reminding him of the ghosts that never leave him. Each step brings him closer to Turnbull’s weapon — a terrifying device capable of leveling an entire coast.

The final confrontation erupts aboard a massive ironclad warship armed with the stolen weapon. Hex and Turnbull clash in a violent reckoning fueled by years of hatred. Haunted by visions of his past and driven by newfound determination, Hex manages to destroy the weapon moments before launch, preventing mass destruction and avenging his family at last.
Though offered wealth and honor for saving the nation, Jonah Hex refuses them. Instead, he rides alone into the horizon — a scarred warrior seeking redemption not through praise but through the endless, dust-filled roads of the frontier.
