When the original Alita: Battle Angel hit theaters in 2019, it left many threads unresolved — secrets about Alita’s origin, the looming power of Zalem, and the fate of the cyborg underworld. Since then, fans have longed for a sequel to finish the arc. As of late 2025, the film’s producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez have publicly rekindled commitment: they’ve reportedly “sworn a blood oath” to make at least one more Alita movie — and possibly even build toward a trilogy if things go well.
Even though no official release date has been set, momentum seems stronger than ever. According to recent statements, the scriptwriting for the sequel is underway, and the creative team is considering a storyline more ambitious than the first film. The original film already covered only a fragment of the source manga by Yukito Kishiro — meaning there remains a wealth of narrative terrain for sequels to explore: Alita’s past, the dark secrets of Zalem, the struggles of the cyborg underworld, and perhaps the final confrontation with powerful adversaries
.
If Alita: Battle Angel 2 – The War Within does come to fruition, it would likely expand not just the personal journey of Alita but also enlarge the world-building. Iron City’s underbelly, Motorball aftermath, political intrigues surrounding Zalem, and the question of who truly controls fate in that cyberpunk society might form the backbone of the story. The sequel could explore deeper themes — identity, humanity versus machinery, justice for the oppressed — while delivering richer action and emotional stakes.
From a production perspective, having the original massive city-set (used in the 2019 film) still standing — and a committed core creative team — offers a tangible advantage. Reportedly, the set remains “in the parking lot” of Rodriguez’s studio, which could accelerate production once the green light is given. Lead actress Rosa Salazar has also indicated she’s ready and eager to return as Alita.

However, there remain important hurdles. The first film, while globally successful, had a complicated financial outcome: its box office revenue — though substantial — reportedly was not sufficient to guarantee easy profitability under the new studio management, which might make green-lighting a sequel tricky. And currently, the heavy involvement of Cameron in other large-scale projects (including upcoming installments of another franchise) might delay actual production of Alita 2 for some time.
Still, for fans of the original, the renewed commitment brings hope. If realized, Alita: Battle Angel 2 – The War Within could finally deliver closure to Alita’s journey — or better yet, open a larger saga about identity, resistance, and survival in a dystopian world where humanity is more than flesh, but also will and soul.
