Lawless follows the Bondurant brothers — Forrest, Howard, and Jack — who run an illegal moonshine business in Franklin County, Virginia during the Prohibition era. The trio is known for being tough, self-reliant, and nearly untouchable, with rumors spreading that they are “invincible.” Under Forrest’s quiet but intimidating leadership, their backwoods operation thrives, supplying bootleg liquor to locals and gangsters alike.
Their world changes when Special Deputy Charlie Rakes arrives from Chicago to crack down on the bootlegging trade. Unlike the corrupt officials the brothers are used to bribing, Rakes is ruthless, sadistic, and determined to bring the Bondurants under his control — or destroy them entirely. When Forrest refuses to cooperate or pay bribes, Rakes unleashes a violent crackdown that ignites a brutal conflict between law enforcement and the outlaw moonshiners.

As tensions rise, younger brother Jack becomes entangled with both the dangerous bootlegging world and a blossoming romance with Bertha, a quiet preacher’s daughter. Eager to prove himself, he forms risky alliances with big-time gangster Floyd Banner, hoping to elevate his family’s operation. But Jack’s ambition and inexperience put the Bondurants directly in the line of fire.
Meanwhile, Forrest develops a relationship with Maggie, a former dancer who becomes the brothers’ bartender and confidante. Her presence brings warmth into Forrest’s hardened life, but also adds vulnerability as Rakes and his men escalate their attacks.

The rivalry explodes into a violent showdown as the Bondurants fight to defend their business, their pride, and each other. Despite betrayals, ambushes, and overwhelming odds, the brothers refuse to back down. The climax delivers a bloody confrontation that tests the myth of their “invincibility,” forcing them to face both loss and resilience.
In the end, Lawless blends grit, brotherhood, and true-story inspiration into a tale of survival, loyalty, and the brutal cost of defying corrupt power during one of America’s wildest eras.
