The story begins with a young archaeologist named Elin, who returns to her remote hometown in northern Norway after receiving news of a mysterious artifact uncovered near an ancient burial mound. Although she left the village years earlier to escape its heavy folklore, something about the strange object—a rusted iron mask bearing runic carvings—draws her back. The villagers whisper about old legends she has spent her life trying to dismiss, but the deeper she looks, the more she realizes the artifact may be connected to the very myths she once rejected.

As Elin studies the mask, she becomes aware of a disturbance around the burial site. Livestock disappear, and locals report seeing a tall, corpse-like figure wandering the forests at night. At first she suspects poachers or pranksters, yet the tracks she finds are far too large and too deep to belong to any human. Despite her growing unease, curiosity pushes her to continue her research, and she discovers that the runes refer to a “restless guardian,” a being cursed to rise whenever its grave is disturbed.

One night, Elin and her childhood friend Sindre visit the mound after hearing strange screams echoing from the valley. The ground appears clawed open from within, and a sickly smell lingers in the air. Sindre urges her to leave, but she insists on documenting everything, believing this could be the discovery that defines her career. Their flashlight beams catch a glimpse of something moving beyond the trees—skin stretched thin over broken bones, eyes burning with a faint blue glow.

The creature, the Draugr, begins haunting the village, attacking those who come near the burial site. Elin realizes too late that removing the mask awakened the ancient warrior, a guardian interred centuries ago to protect sacred relics from intruders. The more she learns, the more she understands that the Draugr is not simply a monster but a tormented soul bound by duty even in death.

Desperate to stop further bloodshed, Elin searches old manuscripts stored in the village chapel. They hint at a ritual capable of returning the Draugr to rest, but it requires confronting the creature directly and replacing the mask upon its face. Sindre volunteers to help her, though both know the plan borders on suicidal.
