In the 2025 live-action reimagining of How to Train Your Dragon, the story once again follows Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a young Viking struggling to find his place on the island of Berk. Unlike the fierce dragon-slaying warriors around him, Hiccup is small, inventive, and more curious than combative. His desire to prove himself leads him into the wilderness, where a fateful encounter changes not only his future, but the future of his entire village.
During one of Berk’s chaotic dragon raids, Hiccup manages to trap the most mysterious and feared species: the elusive Night Fury. Yet when he discovers the injured dragon in a secluded cove the next day, he cannot bring himself to kill it. Instead, he realizes that the creature, whom he later names Toothless, is frightened and wounded. Guided by compassion rather than fear, Hiccup begins the delicate process of gaining the dragon’s trust.

As the bond between Hiccup and Toothless grows, the pair slowly learn to communicate without words. Their early interactions—tentative gestures, shared food, careful sketches on the ground—reveal a truth long ignored by the Viking world: dragons are not mindless monsters but intelligent beings capable of friendship. Hiccup’s inventions and quiet patience help Toothless fly again, transforming their relationship into a partnership built on respect.
Meanwhile, Hiccup’s secret training sessions create problems back in Berk. While he begins to excel in the village’s dragon-fighting lessons, his newfound skills confuse his fellow trainees, including Astrid Hofferson, whose competitive spirit makes her suspicious. Tension builds as Hiccup’s beliefs clash with Viking traditions, and the gap widens between him and his father, Stoick the Vast, the stoic chief determined to protect Berk at any cost.

When the tribe discovers the dragons’ nest and unknowingly threatens a far greater danger, Hiccup is forced to reveal the truth about Toothless. His confession initially sparks anger and disbelief, but the crisis leaves no time for division. In a moment of courage, humans and dragons must unite to face a monstrous threat far more powerful than any creature Berk has seen.
In its final act, the film celebrates trust, bravery, and understanding. Hiccup’s journey—from outcast to bridge between two worlds—reshapes Berk forever, proving that peace is possible when fear gives way to empathy.
